The Great Coach Debate-Reader Results

There are very few groups of fans (if any at all) more passionate than Southeastern Conference football fans.  Alabama faithful, Florida diehards, South Carolina boosters, and Tennessee fanatics all emerged to let us know who they believed should have the title of best SEC coach ever.  It was clear that South Carolina fans were understandably distracted by the NCAA violations announced last week, so they didn’t turn out in huge numbers to support their new gridiron boss.  But Gator Nation fans haven’t forgotten Steve Spurrier, and they help the ‘Ol Ballcoach receive 35 percent of the vote.  Tennessee fans were just a bit upset that neither Phil Fulmer or the legendary Robert Neyland were included in the debate, and their efforts pushed General Neyland to third with 23 percent of the vote.  But Crimson Tide fans (along with several fans from other schools who felt the Bear was worthy) put Bear Bryant in the winner’s circle one more time with 39 percent of the vote.  Former Georgia coach Vince Dooley, Phil Fulmer, and Nick Saban all received multiple votes, with Gene Stallings and Jackie Sherrill getting a vote a piece.

Here are a few samples of what we heard from our readers:

“Spurrier is the best coach, because head to head I think he would trounce Bryant.”

Jorge A.

“Bryant never beat General Neyland.  And the General played by the rules. My vote goes to the General.”

John C.

“Bear Bryant.  This is a no-brainer.”

Jason P.

“Coach Spurrier is a great coach, but there is no comparison to the greatest coach of all-time.  Coach Bryant by a landslide!”

Gene M.

“1. Bear Bryant-Turned three programs around-UK, Texas A&M, and Alabama.

  2. General Neyland-UT coaching career interrupted by military.

  3. Steve Spurrier-Turned two programs around...Duke-UF...If he can do the same

SC, then could move up to number two in SEC.
