Broke Mountain
By Darth Reagan
It looks like the Hollywood crowd has once again created one of the greatest special effects marvels of our time. However, we aren’t talking about virtual dinosaurs or 60 ft apes. Instead, they have been able to portray Brokeback Mountain as a movie Americans actually want to see. Unfortunately for the left, the facts paint a much different picture, which seems to be the case any time we analyze any liberal institution with the truth.
Unless you have been hiding under a rock or stranded in the desert for the past 40 days I’m willing to bet you know the gist of Brokeback Mountain. Hollywood’s latest depiction of “homosexuality as mainstream” is picking up steam within liberal circles, most importantly The Golden Globes. Apparently, the simple fact that nobody actually wants to see the movie has no impact on the voting process. I’m certain Golden Globers would attribute the small audiences to a lack of open-minded intellectuals in America. Ironically, it is upon this same false premise they would build the argument against the successes of such movies as Star Wars, Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings. They were merely sophomoric tales of Good vs. Evil. Well, people actually went to see these movies and pay for it! Unfortunately for the left; numbers don’t lie! Nobody wanted to see your movie!
Opening weekend for Brokeback Mountain earned $547,000. Yes, that is correct. Those are numbers that would make Chevy Chase feel embarrassed. Ironically, The Golden Globes cowboyed up on December 14th, 2005 to nominate their beloved tale in four categories. Let the media blitz begin my friends. Interestingly, not once did I hear any mention of the fact that the movie opened so poorly or that it was out-grossed by such “classics” as ‘The Family Stone’ or ‘Cheaper by the Dozen 2’. Ouch!
One would think that following such a glorious nomination by The Globes, ‘Broke’ would take flight and dominate the Box Office. Not quite. In fact, not even close. Even with the latest buzz created by Hollywood, ‘Broke’ has only grossed $30,000,000 in 40 weeks of release. And in this weekends’ take (Broke’s best yet) it finished 9th! Hardly a blockbuster folks!
This piece isn’t a knock on homosexuals or homosexuality. Rather, it is a knock on the ideologues determined to sell homosexuality for what it isn’t, mainstream. And it never will be because most people aren’t gay. However, that doesn’t mean homosexuality isn’t accepted by Americans. Just look at the popularity of such shows as “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” or the mainstream appeal of such openly gay artists as Elton John. Most people simply want to be entertained, enjoy their lives and let others do very much the same. And most people obviously don’t want to pay $8.00 to see a gay western!
